I visited this place for the first time last year and loved it.

If you’ve watched Peaky Blinders, some of these spots might look familiar. Parts of the show were filmed here, including Charlie Strong’s scrap metal yard, Canal Street Bridge, The Blacksmith’s building, St James’s School and the Workers’ Institute.

Walking around feels like stepping onto a film set. You can wander along the canals, watch traditional blacksmithing and chainmaking demonstrations, explore historic houses and shops and step into streets that recreate over 200 years of life in the Black Country.

And with the new Peaky Blinders film The Immortal Man just released, it feels like the perfect time to visit if you’re a fan of the series.

Add this to your Lake District list 🍃

I’d wanted to visit this spot for years and finally made the walk last May on my annual visit to the Lakes. It looks dramatic, but it’s actually only around 20 minutes up a steady gravel path.

At the top, you’ll find a series of natural rock pools overlooking the lake and surrounding fells and you can continue higher for even more views, which I’m looking forward to doing next time we visit. The water is beautifully clear, and yes, wild swimming is popular here (always take care and check conditions).

If you visit, please stick to the paths, respect the landscape, visit off peak where possible to help reduce pressure on busy areas, and leave it exactly as you found it - so we can enjoy beautiful UK places like this for years to come.

Less than two hours from the UK… and you can be here 🏔️

From the Nordkette, you’re nearly 1,900m above sea level, looking straight down over Innsbruck with snow-covered Alpine peaks all around.

After just a 1.5–2 hour flight, this is one of my favourite things to do when visiting. Grab some lunch or a drink (I highly recommend the warming goulash at the restaurant), sit back in a deck chair and take in the view… or hit the slopes if you’re here to ski ⛷️

This is one of the best viewpoints in Europe.

So… funny story.

I thought I’d booked a table at this restaurant in Nice. I had an email that I assumed was the confirmation, but I didn’t translate it at the time 🫠

Turns out it was actually telling me my reservation hadn’t gone through.

So we arrived all excited… and were politely turned away.

I don’t normally share places I haven’t actually experienced… but this felt like an exception.

It’s such a distinctive space and an incredible piece of architecture, the way it’s built into the landscape is genuinely impressive. I couldn’t just walk away without capturing it.

Now I need your thoughts —
Has anyone eaten here? Is it worth attempting a second try next time I’m in Nice? 🇫🇷

Because I think I owe this place a proper visit.

Moral of the story… check your reservations before you turn up 😅

I was visiting the Peak District when I saw a photo of a cable car rising over a limestone gorge and I genuinely didn’t think it looked like somewhere in the UK. So while I was close by, I had to go and see it for myself.

At the top is the Heights of Abraham, which first opened to visitors back in 1787. Long before the alpine-style cable car arrived over 40 years ago, people would’ve had to walk all the way up. Now you can ride up for views right across the valley, explore old lead mining caverns inside the hillside, wander the woodland paths and even catch a traditional Punch and Judy show in summer.

But that’s only half the story. For centuries, this place has been known for its natural thermal springs and their health benefits, the water still flows at around 20°C, shaping the village’s spa heritage.

And somehow, even though it’s nowhere near the coast, it feels like a seaside town. Arcades, fish and chips, ice cream, boats on the river.

One of those places that completely surprised me.

For a moment I genuinely forgot I was in the UK.

Pastel buildings. Arches and domes. Palm trees overlooking the water. It felt Mediterranean, almost cinematic.

The day we visited there was a steampunk event on which made it even more surreal. Full costumes, music drifting through the village, such a fun atmosphere. They host events throughout the year so it’s always worth checking what’s on before you go.

It wasn’t built to copy Italy, but it was heavily inspired by Italian and Mediterranean architecture. Sir Clough Williams-Ellis began creating it in 1925 to prove that colourful, theatrical design could sit beautifully within nature rather than damage it. Every building was carefully positioned to frame the estuary and protect the woodland around it.

There’s an entrance fee for day visitors, or you can stay overnight and experience it once it goes quiet.

And no, it’s not Italy.

If you’re craving sunshine but don’t want a long haul flight, Lisbon is just under 3 hours from the UK which makes it such an easy Europe city break.

I spent my days wandering the pastel streets of Alfama, climbing up to miradouros for those endless terracotta rooftop views, exploring Belém’s historic landmarks and watching the light hit the Tagus as the city slowed down in the evening. It feels relaxed but full of culture at the same time, the kind of place you can explore properly in a long weekend.
