When I think back on Derby, it’s the variety that really stands out. We spent two nights there, which felt like the perfect amount of time to experience the city, although there was still plenty left on our list for next time.

I wasn’t expecting to find somewhere that combines nearly 2,000 years of history with riverside walks, independent restaurants, world class art, green spaces, sustainability projects and unforgettable wildlife experiences all in one trip.

It’s only around 90 minutes from London by direct train, which makes it such an easy city break if you’re looking for somewhere a little different.

Save this spa just 30 minutes from London 🌿

Whenever I’m asked to recommend a spa near London, this is always one of the first places I suggest.

I love how much it feels like a proper escape, with beautiful natural landscaping, an indoor-outdoor hydrotherapy pool, hot tubs and dreamy relaxation spaces. There’s also a huge choice of treatments, including their signature Inner Harmony massage with aromatherapy oils and crystals.

We stayed in one of the Mews Suites with a private hot tub too, so we could take the spa experience back to our room.

And it’s surprisingly easy to reach, with trains from London St Pancras to St Albans taking as little as 21 minutes, followed by a short taxi.

Before visiting, I had no idea how much history, culture and innovation was packed into one city. In just two days, we found haunted pubs dating back centuries, beautiful riverside walks, incredible independent food, Highland cows and one fascinating story after another.

One of the biggest highlights was discovering that it forms part of the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised as the birthplace of the modern factory system during the Industrial Revolution. Visiting the Museum of Making, built on the site of the world’s first modern factory, really brought that story to life.

I also loved discovering the work of Joseph Wright, whose dramatic candlelit paintings helped define the Age of Enlightenment. Seeing the world’s largest collection of his work in the city where he lived made the experience feel even more special.

Safe to say, Derby completely changed my expectations. If you’re looking for somewhere a little different for your next UK city break, I’d definitely recommend adding it to your list.

If you haven’t been to Herefordshire you need to see this.

On this trip, I found myself wandering through historic market towns, canoeing along one of the UK’s most beautiful rivers, staying in a treehouse surrounded by nature, and even trekking through the countryside with llamas.

On this trip, I found myself wandering through historic market towns, canoeing along one of the UK’s most beautiful rivers, staying in a treehouse surrounded by nature, and even trekking through the countryside with llamas.

Athens is only around a 3 hour 45 minute direct flight from London. 🇬🇷

Athens had never really been on my city break bucket list, and I don’t really know why. I knew about the history, but I hadn’t realised just how much variety there was.

We wandered through ancient ruins, explored colourful neighbourhoods, enjoyed rooftop drinks overlooking the city, ate fresh seafood by the coast and watched some of the most beautiful sunsets. I enjoyed every minute.

We used @freenowbylyft for the whole trip, starting right from the airport. I loved that I could use the same app I already use in the UK, the airport pick-up was really easy to find and the fare was fixed, so there were no surprises. I’ve always loved Monet’s work. I used to paint with watercolours when I was younger and art was always my favourite subject growing up, so finally seeing the gardens that inspired so many of his paintings was really special. I could completely understand why he spent more than 40 years painting here.

I had no idea it was only an hour from Paris. We caught the Nomad train from Paris Saint-Lazare to Vernon-Giverny, then hopped on the shuttle into the village, making it such an easy day trip without needing a car.
