13 Amazing Things to Do in Bahrain

May 7, 2025

Bahrain completely surprised me.

This tiny island nation might not be the first place you think of when planning a sunny escape from the UK, but after spending an unforgettable week exploring its beaches, souqs, ancient forts, and even catching a Formula One race, I can honestly say it’s one of the Middle East’s best-kept secrets.

If you’re dreaming of a destination with clear turquoise waters, golden deserts, rich culture, and modern luxury – all just a 6.5-hour flight from London – then Bahrain needs to be on your list before it gets too popular.

Here’s everything you need to know to plan your own adventure.

Best Time to Visit Bahrain

☀️ The best time to visit Bahrain is between November and April. Temperatures are warm but comfortable (around 20-25°C), perfect for exploring without the intense summer heat.

🏎️ If you’re a motorsport fan, visiting in March or April lines up with the Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix, one of the highlights of the year.

How to Get There

✈️ By Air: Bahrain is easily accessible from the UK, with direct flights from London Heathrow to Bahrain International Airport taking around 6.5 hours. Gulf Air and British Airways both operate direct services.

🚗 By Car: From the airport, it’s just a short 15-minute drive into Manama, the capital city.

Where to Stay in Bahrain

I stayed at the Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, and it was absolutely stunning – think private beach, gorgeous spa, and world-class service. You might even spot flamingos along the shores here, which was such a unique and unexpected highlight! Bahrain offers a range of hotels to suit every style and budget. Here are some top picks:

🏨 1. The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain (Luxury) – Beachfront resort with exceptional dining and spa.

🏡 2. The Merchant House (Boutique) – Stylish suites near Bab Al Bahrain souq.

🛏️ 3. Downtown Rotana (Upscale, mid-range) – Great location for city exploring.

🏰 4. Gulf Hotel Bahrain (Classic luxury) – A longstanding favourite with multiple restaurants.

🚀 5. Ibis Seef Manama (Budget-friendly) – Practical choice for shorter stays with a central location.

Where to Eat in Bahrain

Bahrain has an incredibly vibrant food scene, and during my trip, I was lucky enough to experience a mix of traditional spots, stylish cafes, and fine dining. Here are the places I ate at, along with a few more that come highly recommended if you’re planning your trip:

Places I visited and loved:

Fish Market Restaurant – Fresh seafood lunch after exploring Bahrain Bay.

Bushido – A beautiful Japanese restaurant with stylish interiors and a lively atmosphere. Great for a memorable first night.

Dona’s Wonders – A cosy, local spot in Muharraq for a traditional Bahraini breakfast.

Fatto – Delicious Italian food, perfect for a relaxed lunch at Al Aali Mall.

Astéria (Block 338) – A chic restaurant ideal for a stylish dinner in one of Bahrain’s buzziest districts.

Bahri Restaurant (Hawar Resort) – Seafood-focused dining with beautiful waterfront views on Hawar Island.

Green Bar Restaurant – A small, chic stop perfect for a casual bite before more exploring.

Cantina Kahlo (at Ritz-Carlton) – Colourful, vibrant Mexican food in a beautiful setting.

Haji Cafe – Traditional Bahraini breakfast spot at Bab Al Bahrain souq – simple, authentic, and so satisfying.

Orangery (Block 338) – Gorgeous afternoon tea and lunch spot, surrounded by greenery and perfect for a relaxed meal.

Roka – An incredible final night dinner spot offering contemporary Japanese cuisine with rooftop views.

Timeout Market – A fantastic casual dining space bringing together some of Bahrain’s best eateries under one roof. Perfect if you want lots of choices in one place.

Other highly recommended spots:

Lyra – A stylish Mediterranean restaurant perfect for dinner after a cultural day.

Wherever you choose to eat in Bahrain, you’re bound to find fresh flavours, warm hospitality, and a wonderful mix of traditional and modern.

13 Amazing Things to Do in Bahrain

1. Escape to Jarada Island

This was honestly one of the highlights of the trip for me. The moment we pulled up to Jarada Island and saw the crystal-clear turquoise water, it felt like we’d somehow landed in the Maldives. It’s the perfect spot for a lazy beach day and just soaking up pure, unfiltered beauty.

2. Sunset Horse Riding by the Sea

This was one of those pinch-me moments – trotting along the shoreline as the sun set behind the horizon. The beach was lively but still so peaceful, and watching the sky turn pink while riding was pure magic.

3. Relax at Hawar Resort by Mantis

If you love feeling like you’ve escaped to a different world, this is for you. Hawar felt so remote and untouched, surrounded by beautiful beaches and wildlife. It was the perfect place to truly unwind.

4. Visit the Tree of Life

Standing there in the middle of the desert, staring at this ancient, solitary tree was genuinely humbling. Estimated to be over 400 years old, the Tree of Life has survived in harsh desert conditions with no obvious water source. It’s a powerful symbol of endurance – and seeing it in person was one of the most moving moments of the trip.

5. Sail on a Traditional Dhow Cruise

I loved how this felt like stepping back into old Bahrain. We even had the chance to select oysters onboard to find pearls – and I found a tiny one! The dhow cruise at sunset was peaceful and a beautiful reminder of Bahrain’s pearling heritage.

6. Explore Al Fateh Grand Mosque

This was hands down one of the most beautiful mosques I’ve ever visited. The architecture, the peacefulness, and the way the guides shared so much about Bahraini culture made it such a memorable morning.

7. Stay at The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain

What I loved most about staying here was the stunning beach, amazing restaurants, and peaceful atmosphere. Even without chasing sunsets, the setting felt effortlessly luxurious.

8. Kayak Across Bahrain Bay

Paddling around Bahrain Bay with the skyline glistening in the background was honestly so calming. We kayaked past some of Bahrain’s most iconic landmarks like the Four Seasons Hotel and the Bahrain World Trade Center – it’s such a unique way to see the city.

9. Wander Through Bahrain Fort

Exploring the old fort as the sun dipped was just incredible. I’m a total history nerd at heart and walking through those ancient walls with hardly anyone around made it feel like we’d uncovered a secret.

10. Shop at Souq Bab Al Bahrain

I absolutely loved getting lost in the souq – the smells of spices, the colourful fabrics, and all the little side alleys you could wander down. Don’t miss the beautiful temple hidden inside the souq – it’s a real gem that most people walk straight past.

11. Discover Art at RAK Art Foundation

Tucked away in Muharraq, this place felt like such a hidden find. The art was incredible but what stuck with me most was how peaceful it felt, like you’d stepped into someone’s beautiful secret world.

12. Walk the Pearling Path

Walking the Pearling Path felt like walking through history. Bahrain was once one of the world’s great centres of pearl diving, and this UNESCO-listed trail tells the story beautifully. We visited the traditional boat-making workshop and the stunning Pearling Path Visitor Centre – an incredible piece of contemporary architecture that bridges Bahrain’s past and future.

12. Experience the Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix

Even if you’re not the biggest racing fan, you have to experience this once. The atmosphere at the track was electric – and watching the race from the rooftop under the lights was genuinely unforgettable.

Final Thoughts

Bahrain might be small, but it’s absolutely packed with surprises – from ancient traditions to modern-day thrills.

💬 If you’re looking for somewhere unexpected to add to your travel list this year, Bahrain might just be the hidden gem you’re searching for.
