Despite having some gorgeous weather here in the UK lately, there’s something so comforting about the autumn months getting closer. Crisp mornings, golden colours, countryside walks and cosy pubs at the end of the day.

This one is a little personal for me. My dad grew up here and I grew up nearby, so I’ve been coming here since I was little.

My picks? Proper pub food and estuary views at The Beaver, my favourite pub here and a Hockings ice cream when the van is out 🍦 I’ll stand by it being the best ice cream in the country!

There’s often live music at The Champ too, plus summer brass band evenings on the quay. And for such a little village, it has some brilliant events, including its annual Book Festival and the World Championship Crabbing Contest 🦀

Before visiting, I had no idea one destination was home to wild chickens roaming the streets, rescued manatees, America’s oldest family-owned premium cigar maker and the world’s largest Spanish restaurant.

There is so much variety. You can spend the morning exploring historic neighbourhoods, the afternoon out on the water and the evening discovering an incredible food scene, rooftop bars and waterfront restaurants.

And it’s really easy to get to from the UK too. You can fly direct from London to Tampa, or if you’re already visiting Orlando, it’s around a 1.5–2 hour drive away.

We travelled with @BritishAirwaysHolidays, flying from London Heathrow and staying at @electrarhythmathens. Having our flights and hotel together made everything feel really easy, so we could concentrate on enjoying the trip from the moment we arrived.

My biggest tip for an Athens city break? Don’t try to tick everything off. Leave time to wander, have the long lunch, watch the sunset and escape to the coast. Some of the best parts of this trip were simply having nowhere we needed to rush to.

I’d wanted to meet Highland cows for years, and this experience completely lived up to everything I’d hoped it would be.

Rather than just seeing them from a distance, you get to prepare their favourite treats, brush them, hand feed them and learn all about their different personalities. They’re such gentle, curious animals, and I left with the biggest smile on my face.

If you’re looking for unique things to do in Derbyshire or a memorable UK day trip, I’d definitely add The Highland Cow Experience to your list.
