Amazing Thing to Do in the UK: Black Country Living Museum

Jul 22, 2025

If you love places that feel like stepping into a different world, you’re going to love the Black Country Living Museum. This open-air museum in Dudley, West Midlands recently won England’s Best Large Visitor Attraction, and honestly, after spending the day there, I completely get why.

From canal boats and cobbled streets to vintage sweet shops, Victorian classrooms and a 1950s fairground, this place brings over 250 years of British history to life. It’s educational, emotional and so full of charm. We were there from 10am to 5pm and still didn’t manage to do everything. Luckily, your ticket gives you free entry for a whole year.

When’s the Best Time to Visit?

The museum is open year-round, and each season has something special to offer.

Spring and autumn are great if you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy a more relaxed visit. Summer is perfect for families with longer opening hours and more activities running. If you can visit in December, the museum turns into a Christmas wonderland, with decorations and traditions from the Victorian era through to the 1960s.

There are also some fantastic events throughout the year. The 1940s weekends are especially popular, with live music, vintage outfits and wartime stories. And for Peaky Blinders fans, the museum hosts themed evenings that bring the 1920s to life in the same streets where the show was filmed.

What I Loved Most About Our Visit

We spent a full day exploring, and here are the things that stood out the most.

Real homes frozen in time

We wandered through cast iron houses from different decades. One had floral wallpaper and a black and white TV, while another had old tins tucked into wooden cupboards. It felt like walking into someone’s home rather than a museum.

The shops

There was a 1950s record shop, a Victorian chemist, and a traditional sweet shop that reminded me of trips to the corner shop when I was little. Just the smell of sweets took me right back.

Fish and chips, done right

We had lunch at Hobbs & Sons and it was one of the highlights. The chips are fried in beef dripping and served wrapped in paper. Crispy on the outside, soft inside, and absolutely delicious.

The peaceful canal

The canal that runs through the museum was one of the quietest and most beautiful areas. It tells the story of how goods and materials were once moved across the Black Country, and I loved the way it broke up the busier streets.

The schoolroom

We stepped into an Edwardian classroom with rows of wooden desks and the cane still resting on the teacher’s table. Luke got a very stern (but funny) telling off from the schoolmistress and it gave us both a laugh. Safe to say school was a bit different back then.

No Lukes were actually harmed in the making of this visit.

The fairground

We ended our day at the vintage fairground, and it was the perfect way to finish. There were penny slot machines, a ghost train, and a beautifully restored set of gallopers, the traditional British name for what most people would call a carousel. Unlike their American cousins, gallopers spin clockwise, and the horses are designed for riders to sit side-saddle, facing outwards, so ladies could show off their dresses in the 1800s. It’s a lovely detail that makes it feel all the more special.

As the music played and the horses went round, it felt like we were part of a memory, something joyful and timeless. I couldn’t stop smiling.

What About the Mine Experience?

Although we didn’t get a chance to do it, the museum offers a drift mine experience that lots of people say is one of the best parts. You go underground with a guide and hear what life was like for coal miners in the 1850s, including young boys who started working at just ten years old. It’s at the top of my list for next time.

How Much Time Do You Need?

We visited from 9am to 5pm and still didn’t see everything. You could probably do the highlights in three to four hours, but if you want to take your time and soak it all in, I’d definitely recommend a full day.And the best bit? Your ticket is valid for 12 months, so you can return as many times as you like.

Where to Stay Nearby

If you’re turning it into a weekend trip, here are some great places to stay nearby:

Getting There

The museum is easy to reach. It’s around 30 minutes from Birmingham by car or train. If you’re arriving by train, the nearest station is Dudley Port, and from there you can take a quick taxi or local bus. Parking is available on site too.

Final Thoughts

I expected to learn a few things. I didn’t expect to feel so connected to the past.

The Black Country Living Museum is the kind of place that makes history feel real. It’s not just about displays and facts. It’s about everyday life, real people, and stories that shaped the world we live in today.

If you’re looking for something different to do in the UK, something meaningful and memorable, this needs to go straight on your bucket list. I already can’t wait to go back.
