7 Unique UK Places To Stay for a Relaxing Break
7 Unique UK Places To Stay for a Relaxing Break
If you’re looking for unique UK places to stay for a relaxing break, these are the seven stays I’ve personally tried and would genuinely recommend. I’ve stayed at every place on this list and each one gave me that calm, switched off feeling in a slightly different way
For me, a relaxing break is not just about a nice room. It’s about how you feel when you wake up. Fresh air, slower mornings, views that make you pause, and the kind of quiet that helps your nervous system settle. Sometimes that comes from spa time, sometimes it’s a hot tub under the sky, and sometimes it’s simply being surrounded by trees or water.
In other words, they’re stays that feel like a reset.
Unique UK places to stay for a relaxing break
This list is a mix of spa hotels with brilliant views, a treehouse stay that feels properly secluded, an off grid treehouse with outdoor bathing, and a riverside escape where you can fall asleep to the sound of the water.
First up, I’m starting with the Lake District favourites, then we’ll head to Devon, Herefordshire, Yorkshire, and North Wales.

7 Unique UK Places to stay for a relaxing break
1. Lodore Falls Hotel and Spa, Lake District

Best for
If you love water views, Lodore Falls is one of the most memorable unique UK places to stay in the Lake District with spa time with classic Lake District scenery.
What makes it special
It’s the location. The hotel is right by Lodore Falls, and depending on your room, you can wake up to the sound and view of the waterfall. It’s one of those stays where nature does the calming for you.
→ See rooms, prices, and availability here
What’s on offer at Lodore Falls Hotel and Spa (things to do)
→ Falls Spa thermal suite (saunas, steam rooms, ice fountain, relaxation area)
→ Spa treatments and a rasul chamber
→ Mizu Pan Asian riverside dining
→ Walk to Lodore Falls straight from the hotel
→ Derwentwater walks nearby, plus Keswick a short drive away
My experience
A lot of you asked where that Lake District hotel room view was from one of my reels, and this was it. When we arrived, I was genuinely surprised to see the waterfall from our room. We stayed in what was called a Spa Suite at the time, and we made the most of the spa during our stay because it paired so well with the scenery around Derwentwater.
Even though it’s been a few years, it’s still one of those stays I can picture instantly.
→ See rooms, prices, and availability here
How to get there
By car: Most routes come in via the M6, then across towards Keswick. Lodore Falls is just outside Keswick in the Borrowdale direction.
By train: The nearest mainline station is usually Penrith, then it’s a taxi onwards into the Lakes.
Booking tip
If you’re booking for the view, request it in your notes. It won’t guarantee it, but it can help.

2. Another Place, The Lake, Ullswater, Lake District

Best for
A lakeside weekend that feels outdoorsy, with relaxing downtime built in. It’s one of those unique UK places to stay where the lake is the main event.
What makes it special
It sits right on Ullswater, so the views are part of the experience. It’s also one of those places where you can do as much or as little as you like. You can get outside, go for a swim, or simply sit and watch the lake change colour.

What’s on offer (things to do)
→ If you’re travelling as a family: they also have an Ofsted registered Kids’ Zone with supervised sessions included in the stay.
→ Swim Club (their take on a spa): a 20 metre indoor pool, outdoor hot tub, sauna, cardio room, and treatment rooms.
→ On the lake: SUP, kayaking and canoeing on Ullswater.
→ Open water swimming: guided sessions led by cold water swim expert Colin Hill, including stargazing night swims.
→ Food and drink: casual dining in The Living Space, a seasonal three course menu at Rampsbeck Restaurant, and pizza at The Glasshouse by the lakeshore.
My experience
I stayed in a shepherd’s hut and it was genuinely one of the most charming Lake District escapes. I loved how the whole vibe encouraged slowing down, while still giving you the option to get out on the water or head for a walk.
How to get there
By car: Very doable for a Lake District weekend, especially if you’re coming via the M6.
By train: The nearest mainline station is typically Penrith, then a taxi onwards.
Booking tip
If you love water views, book a room type that makes the most of the lake. That’s what makes this one feel special.

3. Langdale Hotel & Spa, Lake District

Best for
Langdale Hotel & Spa is a weekend in the Lakes, paired with walks and proper fresh air. For a spa plus scenery combo, it’s one of the most reliable unique UK places to stay for switching off.
What makes it special
This is the classic Lake District rhythm done well. Walk first, spa after. It’s also one of my favourite areas for feeling truly surrounded by nature without feeling cut off.
What’s on offer at The Langdale Hotel and Spa (things to do)
→ Brimstone Spa with thermal experiences and an indoor outdoor relaxation pool, adults only
→ Spa therapies (their site lists Pure Alchemy and tRiBe517 treatments)
→ Fitness and leisure facilities including a 20m indoor pool, gym, sauna and hot tub, complimentary for guests
→ Food and drink on site at Stove Restaurant and Bar, plus Wainwrights’ Inn in Chapel Stile for that post walk pub feeling – I love this pub! I also recommend The Britannia Inn.
→ Walks straight from the Langdale Valley, with classic Lake District routes right on your doorstep
My experience
I absolutely adore the Lakes and I’ve been going every year for years, so I’m fussy about where I stay. Langdale is one of my go to choices when I want a peaceful spa break with proper scenery. I also love that you can choose between hotel and self catering accommodation depending on your style of weekend. I love scheduling time at the Brimstone Spa to really switch off surrounded by fresh air.
→ See rooms, prices, and availability here
How to get there
By car: Easy to reach via Ambleside, then you’re straight into valley scenery.
By train: Many people travel via Oxenholme or Windermere and then take a taxi onwards into Langdale.
Booking tip
This one shines when you keep it simple. One good walk, one spa session, and plenty of time to do absolutely nothing in between. I’d really recommend the Elterwater to Chesters walk. It’s about a three mile round trip, mostly flat, and you finish with cake at Chesters while looking out over the beck.

4. Wolf Wood Treehouses, Devon

Best for
A cosy spa treehouse weekend with seclusion and proper peace and quiet in Okehampton, Devon. If a treehouse is on your bucket list, this is one of the cosiest unique UK places to stay I’ve tried
What makes it special
You feel tucked away among the trees, so it genuinely feels like your own private little world. It’s also far more spacious than most people expect a treehouse to be.
What’s on offer at Wolf Wood Treehouses (Spa Treehouse)
→ Private treetop hot tub on your deck for slow soaks among the trees
→ Private sauna as part of the Spa Treehouse set up
→ Woodland setting and total seclusion, so it feels like your own private spa escape
→ Self contained stay so you can do slow evenings in without going anywhere
Want to see the Treehouse and check availability? Click here
My experience
This was one of the cosiest stays I’ve had, full stop. It’s in my home county of Devon, and I loved how secluded it felt. I always thought a treehouse might feel small, but it was surprisingly spacious, with panoramic views and a proper living area. We had a hot tub, a sauna, and cosy corners to curl up in, with views from every room. We stayed in the spa treehouse.
The best bit was the evenings. Fire on, hot tub soaks, and that calm, quiet feeling you only get when you’re properly away from everything.
How to get there
By car: Driving is the easiest option for this one.
By train: It’s possible by rail, but you’ll need a taxi for the final stretch, so plan that in advance.
Booking tip
If you want the full “hidden in the trees” feeling, prioritise privacy when choosing your treehouse.

5. The Fold, Herefordshire

Best for
A pause button weekend where the plan is peace, fresh air, and slow mornings. If you want off grid peace, it’s easily one of the most special unique UK places to stay for a quiet reset.
What makes it special
The Fold Treehouse is one of those stays where the accommodation really is the whole experience. It’s off grid and built with sustainability in mind, using solar power, fresh spring water, and a compost loo, so you feel properly connected to the countryside around you.
It’s also made for slow, cosy living outdoors. The treehouse has a deck for lingering, and if you book this one, you can enjoy those warm, outdoorsy moments that make a weekend feel longer than it is.

What’s on offer at The Fold Treehouse, Herefordshire (things to do)
→ Off grid eco luxe living with solar power, fresh spring water, and a compost loo
→ Outdoor copper roll top bath on the deck, made for warm soaks with the view
→ Outdoor firepit for slow evenings under the stars
→ Wood burner indoors for cosy nights in
→ Simple self catering with a gas hob, so you can do easy dinners without leaving
My experience
This felt like pressing pause. We arrived, dropped our bags, and instantly the pace changed. We spent evenings by the outdoor firepit, then had warm soaks outside, including a proper copper bath on the deck, which was such a lovely touch. It’s the kind of place where you stop reaching for your phone because you do not need it.
How to get there
By car: Driving is simplest for Herefordshire countryside stays like this.
By train: Hereford is usually the nearest main station, then it’s a taxi onwards.
Booking tip
If you want peace and quiet more than anything, this is the one I’d choose when you want a genuine reset. Because it’s solar powered, it’s also worth keeping things simple and leaning into the off grid vibe.

6. The Coniston Hotel Country Estate and Spa, Yorkshire Dales

Best for
The Coniston Hotel is a spa weekend with big countryside views and brilliant outdoor relaxation.
What makes it special
The outdoor spa spaces are the standout. There’s something about soaking outside while looking out at the landscape that makes you slow down instantly.
What’s on offer at The Coniston Hotel Country Estate and Spa (things to do)
→ Nàdarra Spa facilities including a 15m indoor pool, indoor bubble pool, aromatherapy steam room, and a choice of saunas
→ Outdoor spa time with two outdoor infinity pools
→ Treatments and spa days if you want to book a massage or make the spa the main event
→ Dining on site, so you can keep the weekend simple without leaving the estate
→ Land Rover Experience on the estate for a fun add on (especially if you want one “adventure” moment in a slow weekend)
My experience
This was such a relaxing stay. The views over the Yorkshire Dales were gorgeous, and the spa had some amazing offerings including outdoor bathing spaces. Sitting there soaking, watching the birds fly by, felt like the definition of switching off.
We stayed in a Dales Room with a terrace, had a brilliant roast, and I had a massage that left me feeling like I’d been properly reset. I also loved the bento box afternoon tea, which was such a nice change.
If you want an optional extra, the Land Rover experience was genuinely exciting, but still felt relaxed and easy with a great instructor.

How to get there
By car: Very straightforward if you’re driving to the Yorkshire Dales.
By train: Skipton is often a convenient rail base, then it’s a taxi onwards.

7. Craig y Dderwen Riverside Hotel, Betws y Coed, North Wales

Best for
Craig y Dderwen Riverside Hotel is a peaceful riverside weekend, with a romantic feel and easy access to North Wales scenery.
What makes it special
The setting is everything. It’s right by the river, and if you book the right room, you can sit outside and listen to the water while the world slows down.
What’s on offer at Craig y Dderwen Riverside Hotel (things to do)
→ Riverside location on the River Conwy for proper switch off views
→ Restaurant and bar on site so you can keep the weekend simple
→ Walk into Betws-y-Coed for cafes and little shops
→ Swallow Falls nearby for an easy waterfall trip
→ Betws-y-Coed train station if you want to arrive by rail
My experience
This was honestly one of my favourite stays. We had the Hot Tub Room: Four-Poster with a hot tub on the balcony overlooking the river and it was so peaceful. At night we could hear the birds and even owls and we just sat there watching the wildlife below.
It’s also a brilliant base for exploring nearby waterfalls and forest walks, while still keeping that calm village feel.
→ See rooms, prices, and availability here
How to get there
By car: Easy to reach and great if you want to explore the wider area.
By train: Betws-y-Coed has its own station, which makes this a good option for a car light break.
