I’ve been visiting the Lake District every year for the past 12 years — in the height of summer when everything’s busy and glowing and in the middle of winter when you’re sitting in a steaming outdoor pool while it snows.

It’s my favourite place in the UK for a spa break.

There’s something about stepping out of a sauna into cold fell air, or floating in a heated pool with views across Windermere or Derwentwater. It feels restorative in a way city spas just don’t.

These aren’t random picks. They’re spa hotels I’ve personally stayed in or visited, with honest thoughts on what the facilities are actually like and who they’re best for.

I was visiting the Peak District when I saw a photo of a cable car rising over a limestone gorge and I genuinely didn’t think it looked like somewhere in the UK. So while I was close by, I had to go and see it for myself.

At the top is the Heights of Abraham, which first opened to visitors back in 1787. Long before the alpine-style cable car arrived over 40 years ago, people would’ve had to walk all the way up. Now you can ride up for views right across the valley, explore old lead mining caverns inside the hillside, wander the woodland paths and even catch a traditional Punch and Judy show in summer.

But that’s only half the story. For centuries, this place has been known for its natural thermal springs and their health benefits, the water still flows at around 20°C, shaping the village’s spa heritage.

And somehow, even though it’s nowhere near the coast, it feels like a seaside town. Arcades, fish and chips, ice cream, boats on the river.

One of those places that completely surprised me.

For a moment I genuinely forgot I was in the UK.

Pastel buildings. Arches and domes. Palm trees overlooking the water. It felt Mediterranean, almost cinematic.

The day we visited there was a steampunk event on which made it even more surreal. Full costumes, music drifting through the village, such a fun atmosphere. They host events throughout the year so it’s always worth checking what’s on before you go.

It wasn’t built to copy Italy, but it was heavily inspired by Italian and Mediterranean architecture. Sir Clough Williams-Ellis began creating it in 1925 to prove that colourful, theatrical design could sit beautifully within nature rather than damage it. Every building was carefully positioned to frame the estuary and protect the woodland around it.

There’s an entrance fee for day visitors, or you can stay overnight and experience it once it goes quiet.

And no, it’s not Italy.

SAVE this for your Lisbon list 🇵🇹

If you’re craving sunshine but don’t want a long haul flight, Lisbon is just under 3 hours from the UK which makes it such an easy Europe city break.

I spent my days wandering the pastel streets of Alfama, climbing up to miradouros for those endless terracotta rooftop views, exploring Belém’s historic landmarks and watching the light hit the Tagus as the city slowed down in the evening. It feels relaxed but full of culture at the same time, the kind of place you can explore properly in a long weekend.

I thought we were just heading to a pretty UK seaside village… then I learnt about the smuggling history and was instantly intrigued.

Some of these cottages were once connected by hidden passageways used to move contraband between houses while ships waited offshore. Now it’s all quiet sea views and winding cobbled streets, but you can still feel the drama in the landscape.

Down on the beach, the cliffs are Jurassic and you can actually find fossils if you look closely. The Cleveland Way runs along the North Yorkshire coast above the village, with huge open views over the sea.

One of those places that feels peaceful but full of stories.

I just needed some air.

Save for a future trip 📌

January had us feeling a bit cooped up. Grey skies, too much inside time and that heavy feeling like you haven’t properly breathed in weeks.

So for my birthday we booked somewhere that promised space and fresh air.

There’s something about mountain air that feels different. It’s cleaner, crisper and at higher altitude your body has to work a little harder for oxygen, which actually makes you slow down and breathe more deeply. Add the quiet, the open space and you can feel your nervous system settle.

Cold mornings. Steam rising into the air. Snow underfoot. Views that made us stop and breathe even deeper.

It didn’t disappoint.

And if you’re wondering where this kind of reset exists… it’s the Austrian Alps.

This didn’t feel real 🤯 save for a future trip.

We only did the shortest, easiest route and still ended up with views that felt completely unreal. There are definitely longer trails if you’re after more of a walk, but even the quick one takes you straight into this wild glacial valley. It felt like stepping into a frozen moment in time.

There’s parking right off the main road at Ogwen, and the path starts from there which makes it really accessible.

I found out that this was the first place in Wales to be made a National Nature Reserve. Some of the rocks here are over 400 million years old and Darwin even studied this landscape to understand how glaciers shape the land.
