A Magical Christmas in Salzburg: Your Complete Festive Guide

Dec 11, 2025

There is something about Salzburg at Christmas that feels instantly calming. I spent four nights here with my husband Luke and our mums experiencing Christmas in Salzburg and it quickly became one of those trips we will remember for years. Between the Christmas markets, the Sound of Music nostalgia, the snowy viewpoints and those lovely quiet moments in between, Christmas in Salzburg felt truly magical. I am excited to share everything that made this festive trip so special.

We travelled with British Airways Holidays which made the whole journey really easy. The flight from the UK is just two hours and Salzburg Airport is so close to the city. We hopped in a taxi and were at our hotel in minutes. Salzburg is also incredibly walkable which made exploring feel relaxed and effortless, even when wrapped up against the cold.

Where to stay for Christmas in Salzburg

OUR STAY

Hotel Sacher Salzburg

We stayed at the iconic Hotel Sacher and it genuinely shaped our whole experience. The hotel overlooks the river and our suite had a balcony with beautiful views across Salzburg.

Hotel Sacher Salzburg is one of the city’s most iconic places to stay. It sits right on the river in the heart of Salzburg so you can walk to the Old Town, the Christmas markets, Mirabell Gardens and most Sound of Music locations with ease. We were on a package which included flights and hotel with British Airways Holidays.

We stayed in a beautiful suite with a balcony overlooking the river and it felt like a calm little retreat after busy festive days. The hotel has that elegant, classic feel but still feels warm and welcoming, especially at Christmas when everything is decorated.

The service really stood out. The team remembered our breakfast order each morning – I had scrambled eggs with bacon every day and it really set me up for the cold weather. Little touches like that made the stay feel thoughtful and personal.

You can also try the famous Original Sacher-Torte here. It was created in 1832 by Franz Sacher and served to Austrian royalty before becoming one of the country’s most-loved desserts. Having it in the place where it was first perfected feels like a little piece of history.

It’s a brilliant base for exploring Salzburg, especially if you want somewhere central, elegant and easy.

How to get around at Christmas in Salzburg

We found the Salzburg Card really useful for getting around and seeing more without having to think about tickets. It includes free entry to over 30 attractions like the Museum der Moderne, the Christmas Museum and Mozart’s Residence, plus unlimited use of public transport and even the funicular. It made everything feel simple and saved us a lot of money, especially on the days we packed in a few sights. If you want an easy, good-value way to explore, this is definitely worth getting. Salzburg is also very walkable. Most places are within 10 to 20 minutes on foot and the routes are safe, clean and easy to follow.

Christmas Markets in Salzburg

Salzburg has some of the prettiest Christmas markets in Europe and each one feels a little different. Salzburg’s Christmas markets usually run from mid to late November until Christmas Eve, with the main Christkindlmarkt staying open right through to 1 January. Weekdays are quieter, while weekends feel more atmospheric with choirs and festive performances in the squares. If you want the prettiest photos and a calmer wander, aim for late November or early December.

Most markets are within easy walking distance of each other in the Old Town, making it simple to explore a few in one afternoon and soak up that traditional Austrian Christmas feeling.

Christkindlmarkt (Cathedral Square)

This is the most famous market and it feels wonderfully traditional with lights, stalls and the cathedral as the backdrop. It is one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world and has been part of Salzburg’s festive season since the 15th century. We loved the atmosphere here and bought a few decorations we’ll keep forever.

This is the easiest market to reach as it sits right in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town. Everything in this area is walkable and you’ll naturally pass through it while exploring the historic centre.

Hellbrunn Advent Magic

Set in the grounds of Hellbrunn Palace, this is one of the most magical parts of a Salzburg Christmas trip. The courtyard is filled with Christmas trees, lights and stalls and it feels almost storybook. There is also a Krampus area where you can learn more about this Austrian tradition. Krampus is a folklore figure who appears at Christmas to warn off bad behaviour. I had heard of it before but never fully understood it until this trip.

Hellbrunn is outside the city centre but still easy to reach The journey takes 15 to 20 minutes. We took a taxi (Uber) but you can also use bus 25 from the Old Town (every 10 to 15 minutes) which stops right outside the palace.

Mirabellplatz Market

Smaller and very charming. Great for a cup of Glühwein and a warm snack. It felt relaxed and easy to wander.

Found directly opposite Mirabell Gardens on the north side of the river. From the Old Town you can walk across Makartsteg bridge in around 10 minutes, making it one of the simplest markets to reach on foot.

Stern Advent Market

A lovely, smaller market beside Sternbräu. We picked up a couple of handmade decorations here which will always remind us of this trip and had a lovely warming lunch in Sternbräu Restaurant.

Located just a couple of minutes from Getreidegasse, this cosy courtyard market is tucked inside the Sternbräu complex. It’s a very easy walk from the Old Town and close to many shops, cafés and museums

Advent Market at Fortress Hohensalzburg

Set inside the courtyard of Salzburg’s medieval hilltop fortress, this Christmas market feels a little different from the ones in the Old Town. You reach it by taking the funicular up Festungsberg which adds to the experience and once you’re at the top you get some of the best views in Salzburg. The market itself is small and traditional with local crafts, music and a really cosy atmosphere.

It usually runs at weekends during Advent and is a lovely addition if you want something a bit quieter and more scenic.

Mondsee Christmas Market (additional festive stop)

Mondsee is a lovely lakeside town just outside Salzburg and makes a sweet festive add-on if you have a car or are doing the Sound of Music tour. It’s about 30 minutes by car or around 50 minutes by public transport and is home to the beautiful Basilica of St Michael, where the wedding scene was filmed in the Sound of Music. The small Christmas market here feels cosy and traditional with local crafts, warm food and a very relaxed atmosphere. We tried the Käsespätzle, Austria’s version of macaroni and cheese, and it was delicious. It’s a simple, pretty spot to explore before heading back into Salzburg.

If you want the most festive atmosphere without the biggest crowds, the last week of November or early December is ideal. We visited during this window and found the markets lively but still easy to wander.

Yes — most are within 5 to 15 minutes’ walk around the historic centre. Hellbrunn is the only one slightly outside the main area but still easy to reach by bus or taxi. This made it really easy to explore several in a day.

A 3 to 4 night trip is perfect. We stayed four nights and felt it was the ideal amount of time to enjoy the markets, visit the Sound of Music filming locations, try the local food and even relax a little.

It can be, especially food and hotels in peak season. But you can still enjoy the markets without spending too much. Snacks like pretzels, sausages and roasted chestnuts are very reasonable and feel like part of the experience.

Salzburg in winter can be crisp and chilly, usually sitting between 0°C and 5°C during the day, with colder evenings. When we visited in November we had a mix of bright, cold days and fresh snowfall, so warm layers, gloves and comfortable boots make all the difference while wandering the markets.
